How do I charge/jump start the 18 volt battery of an antique car?

It’s a 1947 Cadillac, I was supposed to be starting it up periodically for the owner, but there’s not enough juice. Can I just use a regular 12 volt starting pack, or just jump it off of my truck like a 12 volt battery, or are my options more limited?

First, a 47 Caddy has a 6-volt system not 18 volts. And, no, you cannot jump it with a 12 volt battery without risking serious damage to hard to find parts. Purchase a battery charger with a 6/12 switching system and use it to keep the battery charged.

  2. The 1947 Cadillac was 6 volts, negative ground. You should get a battery charger on it with a 6 volt setting and charge the battery up.

You might try giving it a jump with a 12 volt battery pack - but I wouldn’t recommend it - I’m confident that the electrical components in this vehicle are both difficult to find and expensive when they are found.

  3. There weren’t any 18 volt cars made in 1947.
Maybe you meant to say 6 volt.
Please check it again and if it is 6 volt, you must only use a 6 volt charger.
DO NOT JUMP A 6 VOLT WITH A 12 VOLT CAR.

Take the battery out of the car to charge it.
Severe damage to electrical components may occur if you get a surge.
