Why were so many historic European vintage cars made right hand drive?

Because Britain was, and remains today, a country where you must drive on the left hand side of the road.

Driving on the right was the way that they did things in some european countries. Because there were not as many cars being manufactured, there was really no demand to convert them over back then.
